Building a Healthy Community with B-Well Bensenville

Plan4Health’s initiative in Bensenville, Illinois is committed to increasing physical activity opportunities for residents — making this village just outside of Chicago a destination for walkers and bicyclists!

Ad for B-Well Bensenville WalkathonLaunched in May 2014, the B-Well Bensenville coalition works to connect residents to healthy activities and to integrate planning and public health strategies. During the initial months of B-Well’s Plan4Health initiative, the coalition has conducted a community-wide survey to understand why residents might not be able to walk to school or bike to work.  This feedback will be incorporated into Complete Streets priorities and active transportation policies. Designing a bike-to-train guide will complement the proposed policy changes, empowering residents to take advantage of the local trail system and the existing infrastructure today, as the community looks ahead to making all streets accessible and safe for tomorrow.

If you’re in the Chicago area, B-Well Bensenville is hosting its 2nd Annual B-Well Bensenville Walkathon on Saturday, September 12. Join the coalition and community members for activities and fun!  To learn more about the family fest, check out the coalition’s new website at www.bwellbensenville.com/.

APA member Victoria Benham is part of the Plan4Health initiative’s leadership team — and is a planner with the Village of Bensenville.

Victoria is attending APA’s upcoming Policy and Advocacy Conference September 27–29 to share more about the importance of community-based programs. It’s not too late to join Victoria, Plan4Health community members from across the county, and APA in Washington, D.C.! Policy conference registration is open through September 10.
