Focus Areas

Planning and public health professionals are uniting to build coalitions and engage communities and help shape everyday lives. Plan4Health coalitions are working in two focus areas: nutrition and physical activity. Coalitions are focusing on population-level change — using policy, systems, and environmental change strategies — to engage community members, and to work toward achieving health equity through a health in all policies approach.

Nutrition

From the food procurement policy at the local corner store to the space allotted for the weekly farmers market, coalitions are working to increase access to environments with healthy food or beverage options.

Example strategies include:

  • Supporting and expanding community garden initiatives.
  • Assessing and improving healthy vending options.
  • Improving the health food supply chain throughout the region.

Physical Activity

From Complete Streets to re-energizing parks, coalitions are working to increase access to opportunities for physical activity in their communities.

Examples strategies include:

  • Implementing Complete Streets.
  • Increasing positive attitudes towards active transportation.
  • Demonstrating traffic calming measures to improve the pedestrian experience and developing a lending library of resources.
