Housing is a Social Determinant of Health

As the old saying goes, home should be ‘where the heart is’, but for many, it’s where the health risks are. Recognizing housing as a social determinant of health, and how we can create and ensure healthy homes, is key to increasing health equity and creating a more healthy nation.

Check out the these healthy home principles from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development:

  • Keep it dry
  • Keep it clean
  • Keep it safe
  • Keep it well-ventilated
  • Keep it pest free
  • Keep it contaminant free
  • Keep your home maintained
  • Keep it thermally controlled
